Crop Over is the chance for the whole island to burst into song and dance, fuelled with plenty of rum. It celebrates the completion of the sugar harvest and dates back to the 1780s. This non-stop Barbados carnival happens all over the island, starting in July and going until the first Monday in August.

Any excuse for a Barbados Carnival: the wonderfully vibrant Kadooment marks the end of Crop Over. This Caribbean party to end all parties happens on the first Monday in August. Think Rio Carnival but with even more feathers, sequins, and insane amounts of rum. You can't help but join in.

This is definitely one for petrolheads. The Sol Rally roars around the island at the end of May. Watch the cars catching some air jumps, rip-roaring their way around dirt tracks, and tearing the place up. The best spot to watch the action is close to Dover Beach.

Celebrating the first settlement of the island, Holetown Festival is one of the best Barbados carnival events of the year. The week-long party starts in mid-February with processions, music and dancing that runs late into the night. Look out for the Saturday street fair packed with arts and crafts, and some amazing street food.

Theres a surprisingly strong link between Barbados and the Celtic nations, especially Wales. In the 1990s a Welsh Male-Voice Choir visited the island and the Celtic festival was born. Come for the craic from 21 to 29 May in St Michael.
