Folks flock to New York’s Chinese neighbourhood for its incredible restaurants, temples, festivals and shops and market stalls full of traditional crafts. Foodies and culture vultures: A wander around Chinatown’s vibrant and colourful streets is definitely not to be missed. If you’re visiting in February, you may be lucky enough to catch the Lunar New Year parade and Firecracker festivities.

Unsurprisingly located smack bang in the centre of the city, Central Park is one of the most popular tourist attractions in New York City. And with good reason – in amongst the concrete jungle is a green oasis, a hotspot for locals as much as visitors. Pay tribute to John Lennon at Strawberry Fields, explore the zoo, take a boat onto the lake (or ice skate around it if you’re visiting in the winter). Despite its popularity, there’s always a secluded space to be found somewhere along your stroll or bike route. Picnic, anyone?

One of the most recognised New York attractions, the Brooklyn Bridge is a beautiful, mile-long suspension/cable-stayed hybrid bridge connecting the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn over the East River. A stroll across the elevated promenade will take around 40 minutes, and the views of the Statue of Liberty and the NYC skyline are truly spectacular. Head to the bridge for a sunset you’ll never forget.

The jewel in the NYC skyline’s crown, The Empire State Building is an architectural delight. It stands at a whopping 1,454 feet tall and has been named one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. The best views of the skyscraper can be found at Top of the Rock’s viewing platform. Good with heights? Don’t miss out on climbing to the top of the Art Deco masterpiece itself for unbelievable 360° views. Definitely a sunset hotspot.

No matter how fleeting your visit to New York, catch a show on Broadway. You just have to. Broadway – mostly located around Times Square – puts on shows of all kinds and is famous for spectacular musicals. It’s certainly worth booking tickets well in advance of your trip, but there’s bound to be something – from big budget productions to smaller stage debuts – last minute too

New York’s iconic Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island is a 152 feet tall depiction of the Roman goddess Libertas. The statue was a gift of friendship from the French in 1886, and is a symbol of freedom and democracy; take a boat trip out to the island or view her from the shore at Battery Park, Manhattan. The three-hour ferry trip also takes you to the neighbouring Ellis Island, and is a New York sightseeing must.

Art fanatics, Midtown’s MoMa will be right up your street, with its impressive selection of American and international contemporary works to admire. Most famously, Van Gogh’s Starry Night calls MoMa home, as well as Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon. A great rainy (or sunny) day activity, the building itself is a work of art, and the museum restaurant serves good food to keep you well-fuelled.

Coney Island is the ever-popular beach neighbourhood just under an hour from Midtown. The quirky neighbourhood is over a century old, and possesses a kind of kitschy charm as a result. Spend some time on the white sand beach (of course) and check out the sideshows and food vendors along the boardwalk. Lunar Park, of The Cyclone roller coaster fame, is a must-visit, and the aquarium will keep the kids happy.

While the Italian presence in this neighbour may be smaller than it once was, Little Italy is still up there with the top New York attractions. Mostly concentrated around Mulberry Street, you’ll find dozens of popular bars and authentic restaurants doing their heritage proud – head to Rubirosa for their famous pizza with vodka sauce. Around late September? Try and catch the annual San Gennaro Festival with its colourful processions, feasting and partying.

The Battery, on the southern tip of Manhattan, is a 25-acre public park and the go-to vantage point for the Statue of Liberty and New York Harbor. It’s also home to the harbour from which ferry tours will take you to both Ellis and Liberty Island. While you’re there, take a tour of the park and its stunning perennial gardens, ride the famous SeaGlass Carousel and visit the Castle Clinton National Monument.

A revolutionary piece of architecture, the Flatiron Building certainly holds its own in amongst the towering building in the New York skyline. The building is distinctive in its uniquely narrow, prowlike shape and is dripping with history. Various installations can be seen in the glass Flatiron Prow Art Space, but for the best views of the building, head to the traffic island north of 23rd Street, between Broadway and Fifth Avenue.

”The Met” houses over two million works of art, representing 5,000 years of history, in its permanent collection alone. Don’t miss the chance to see some of these works in person; the museum is huge, so you could spend an entire week in its winding corridors, no problem. If you’re short on time, plan ahead: Know what you’re most interested in seeing, and beeline.

At 76 acres, Grand Central Terminal is the world’s largest railway station and one of the most extraordinary New York attractions. Inside, sparkling chandeliers cascade from the striking blue ceiling with its celestial mural, and stunning marble steps form the Grand Staircase. It’s truly breathtaking to behold, and the shops and restaurants aren’t half bad, either. Your best bet is to avoid rush hour, as around 750,000 commuters pass through the station each day.

This exquisite Beaux Arts style library has been featured in many a movie, and no New York attractions guide would be complete without it. Need some peace and quiet from the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple? The main reading gallery on the 3rd floor, with its arch windows and chandeliers, is the ultimate stress-free location for a spot of reading. This room alone is two city blocks in size!

Sports fans, Yankee Stadium is undoubtedly on your radar already (unless you’re a Mets fan) whether you’ve scored tickets to a game or you simply plan to tour the home of the 27-Time World Series Champions, the New York Yankees. Tours last about an hour and tend to include the museum and Monument Park, too - Even the biggest sports adversaries will enjoy themselves.

Home to an ice rink, a zoo and a plethora of events and concerts at the Bandshell, this Brooklyn park is the ideal place to spend a full day exploring; hire a pedal boat, wander the botanic gardens, and admire the ravine. The creators of Central Park decided their project a decade later – Prospect Park – was an ‘improvement’. We’ll leave judgement up to you, but be sure to check what’s on during your visit!

The Guggenheim’s nautilus shell-like, sculptured design is truly spectacular. And the museum is home to one of the world’s best modern art collections, too; art-oglers take the elevator right to the top of the building and follow the spiral ramp downwards. From Picasso and Kandinsky to a fully functional 18-karat gold toilet, the curation of works here is entirely unique and consequently unmissable.

A food court, shopping mall, office space and TV production facility all rolled into one, Chelsea Market is an entire city-block-sized stomping ground for foodies. The ethos here is “Building Community Through Food”, and you’ll love moseying around the various artisanal shops, and word on the street: Los Tacos is theplace to refuel.

One of the most unique attractions in New York is this repurposed railway turned elevated park, which stretches 2.33 kilometres along West Manhattan. Innovation is the name of the game with this stunning aerial greenway, where you’ll find all kinds of installations year round and locals practising their Tai Chi. Take a guided tour to find out more about its history and horticulture, or stroll on your own time and soak up the green.

Once the tallest building in the world – at an impressive 1,046 feet tall–the Chrysler Building is an iconic skyscraper in the NYC skyline. The tower’s classic Art Deco style “crown” is an architectural masterpiece, and, insider secret: The best view is from either the north or southeast corner of E. 44th Street and Third Avenue. If you have the time, check out the lobby which is home to a beautiful mural by artist Edward Trumball.

Neighbour to Liberty Island and the Statue of Liberty herself, Ellis Island is a landmark of incredible historical importance; take a Manhattan Cruise to the island from Battery park, where you can visit the National Museum of Immigration. For the best view of the island, why not take a helicopter tour for an aerial view of the island and the Statue of Liberty?

One of the more recent attractions in New York, the Whitney was rehomed in 2015 and is now nestled between the High Line and the Hudson River, in the Meatpacking District of Manhattan. The museum comprises six floors open to the general public (eight total), over 50,000 square feet of gallery space, and houses work from over 3,000 artists. 13,000 more square feet is dedicated to outdoor space – this in itself is well worth a visit.

An urban sanctuary in amongst the hubbub of central Manhattan, Madison Square Park is the perfect escape for a bit of R&R or a tasty burger from the flagship Shake Shack. The free WiFi means you can scroll through your Instagram feed outdoors, but if you’re more into “IRL” art, the park is full of exhibits and monuments for you to check out. Throughout summer, Mad. Sq. Music takes over, with evenings full of live music and performances.

Not on Madison Avenue, not a square and not even a garden, Madison Square Garden holds 300 events a year and is the home of the Knicks, Rangers and Liberty. The arena has also been the stage for some of the world’s biggest political and cultural events. Go behind the scenes with an MSG tour, which commemorates its 130 years, or check the box office before your trip to see what will be on.

Boasting NYC’s newest park and a Gothic-revival lighthouse to explore, plus the most memorable commute in the city, make sure to fit in a trip to Roosevelt Island, which is technically part of Manhattan. The tram ride across the East River – as seen in Spiderman movies – is worth doing in itself.

During the 19th century, the South Street Seaport was the city’s main port. Nowadays, following a great deal of restoration and even more development, this National Register Historic District is one of the most fascinating attractions in New York; find restaurants, museums, historic buildings and ships and markets galore, and catch some of the best views of the Brooklyn Bridge there too.

A small residential enclave next to Union Square, Gramercy Park is as exclusive as it is sought after in real estate. Where the neighbourhood starts and finishes is somewhat unclear, but the famously private and gated park is at the centre. Unless you know someone with a key, there’s no getting into the park itself, but wandering the charming neighbourhood streets and its selection of cafes, bars and shops is a treat in itself.

The area in Midtown, Manhattan where most Broadway theatres (as well as other theatres, cinemas, restaurants and hotels) are located, the Theater District is a fundamental element of the New York experience. Try to catch a musical or show on your trip; bigger ones will need to be booked well, well in advance, but if you’re lucky you might be able to score tickets to something smaller without forward-planning.

Established in 1913, Apollo Theater in the Harlem district of NYC has its roots in Burlesque theatre. Since then, it’s played host to popular African American artists like Aretha Franklin, Duke Ellington, James Brown and Ella Fitzgerald, after Harlem opened up to African Americans making the Great Migration out of the South in the 1910s. These days you can catch comedy and music, including one of NYC’s most popular live entertainment experiences, ‘Amateur Night!’

In the heart of Brooklyn is a 52-acre, botanical Eden. Just a few things on the flora-focused agenda here: a Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden with a lake at its centre, an intoxicating fragrance garden, and bonsai trees thriving in the warm-temperate climate of the renowned Steinhardt Conservatory. This place is truly paradisiacal, and right in the centre of the city that never sleeps – who’d have thought it? Take a Saturday or Sunday tour or wander the gardens yourself. Bliss.

You may still know it as the World Financial Center, but Brookfield Place has had a makeover. These days, it’s a $250 million shopping center, with fashion, food and art at its core. Home to the flagship Saks Fifth Avenue store as well as Le District – the French’s answer to Chinatown or Eataly – and a whole host of brands big and small. It’s the architecture of the striking Pavilion entrance that people remember, though. You need to see it for yourself.

By no means is The Cloisters the first museum in our guide to New York attractions, but listen up: This one’s a bit of a hidden gem. Though it’s a branch of the Met, The Cloisters at Fort Tryon Park tends to slip under the radar, but if European medieval architecture is your thing, you’ll love it. The Gothic-style building itself is as much a part of the exhibition as the 5,000 medieval artworks inside its walls.

A Times Square family favourite, Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! is the perfect activity with or without the kids. Over 500 weird and wonderfully wacky exhibits and activities are on offer, from the famous LaseRace laser agility challenge to the equally renowned shrunken heads exhibit. There’s something for everyone and it really is a whole lot of (very, very strange) fun.

Fort Totten Park, an unspoiled parkland surrounding a preserved Civil War Fortress, is frequented by locals as much as it is visitors, and with good reason. Sunbathe around the pool or picnic in the park, canoe along the Long Island Sound and investigate the hidden nooks and crannies of the fortress. If you’re around for Halloween, be sure to take a ‘haunted’ lantern tour, which is definitely not for the faint hearted!

A 172-acre island only accessible by ferry, Governor’s Island is unlike anywhere else in NYC. its highest peak, Outlook Hill, stands some 70 feet above sea level, with views of the Statue of Liberty and the One World Trade Center. There’s an abundance of activities for every interest, from mini golf and play fountains to bike trails and zip lining, and so much more. Note: the island is only open to the public in the summer.
