Pandora – The World of AVATAR is a themed area inspired by James Cameron's AVATAR, located within Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park. Its lunar landscape is based upon Pandora, home planet of the Na’vi people, and features otherworldly geography, alien wildlife, and bioluminescent plants. The most visually imposing feature is a floating mountain range, covered in intricate vines and mosses. There are two attractions: Na’vi River Journey and AVATAR Flight of Passage. The former is a tranquil, glowing boat ride, suitable for all ages; the latter, a rollicking, immersive 3D odyssey in which you soar down a mountain bestride a banshee. Both attractions are impressive, but perhaps best of all is seeing how this area of the park transforms in the evening: fibre optics and black light effects make for a fluorescent extra-terrestrial world that feels shockingly real.

Volcano Bay™ is Universal Orlando’s newest water park, opened in 2017. Designed around a Polynesian Island theme, its namesake is Krakatau, a 200-foot tall “volcano” that features waterfalls in the daytime and “lava flows” at night. Volcano Bay™ offers TapuTapu™, a wristband virtual queuing system, so you spend less time standing in line and more time relaxing. Slides and raft attractions are the big draw at Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park, but there are also a lot of areas to relax with the family. Named due to its melted-away ski resort theme, you may be surprised to learn water temperatures are maintained at around a balmy 21˚C. Most of the major attractions are clustered atop Mt Gushmore, a nearly 30-meter tall hill and “slopes” are conveniently colour-coded to aid with navigation. Head to the top of Mt Gushmore for the parks most extreme attraction, Summit Plummet, a 120ft ski jump inspired slide that propels riders at speeds of 55mph!

Gatorland is pure Floridian fun, and affordable to boot. The 45-hectare theme park and wildlife preserve features thousands of alligators and crocodiles, proudly billing itself as the “Alligator Capital of the World.” You can catch a “gator wrestlin’” show in its shaded stadium, which is concentrated Old Florida charm. There’s also an aviary, swamp walk, reptile shows, and a petting zoo (err, with cute, furry things.) For a high-flying thrill, strap into the 20-meter high zip line and soar above gators and crocs at nearly 48 kilometres per hour.

Old Town is an outdoor shopping and entertainment complex in Kissimmee, near Walt Disney World. It’s a charmingly kitschy place to round out the day with fast-casual dinner, souvenir shopping, and–yes–more rides. Old Town’s classic Americana vibe is supplied by its retro storefronts, old-school amusement park rides, and Wednesday night classic car show. Fun Spot America is a budget- and family-friendly amalgamation of an arcade, amusement park and theme park. Its two locations, Orlando and Kissimmee, both offer rides with varying levels of intensity to suit guests of all ages. Roller coasters, drop rides, and thrill rides will please the adrenaline junkies in your party. For little ones, there are spinning teacups, a mini-coaster, kiddie swings, and other gentle rides. Pretty cool already, right? The 4D simulator ride is housed inside a replica of 30 Rockefeller Center, the famous Manhattan skyscraper where The Tonight Show is taped. You’ll pass through two floors worth of memorabilia as you make your way towards a flying theatre that seats 72. The Roots jam out as you and Jimmy Fallon careen through backstage corridors, dashing past The Tonight Show characters like Tight Pants and Hashtag the Panda before eventually crashing down into Times Square. This adventure ride combines screens, animatronics, and physical ride elements to thrilling effect. The queue starts beneath a giant Kong sculpture, and proceeds through an eerie temple, displaying totems, relics, and skulls galore –you even pass through a chamber where a shamanic ritual is being held! Next, you’ll reach base camp, where supplies are being prepared for your expedition to Skull Island. Finally, you hop aboard an expedition truck with your fellow intrepid explorers and set out to battle scary jungle creatures and massive dinosaurs before the exhilarating climax: squaring off with Kong himself.

Ready to cool down and get off your feet for a minute? Check out this charming mini-movie, set between Shrek and Shrek 2. For the pre-show, you enter a wonderfully chilly Duloc dungeon, where the Three Little Pigs, Pinocchio, and the Magic Mirror humorously set the stage. Next, you’ll receive your 3D glasses and head into the theatre. The movie itself is a traditional 3D feature with added interactive elements like water effects and rumbling seats. if you’re head ogre heels for Shrek, this will be one of their favourite activities of the day.
